Jenny Rizzo

About Jenny

Jenny holds a B.F.A. in Music Theater from The Hartt School (University of Hartford) and studied Classical Voice and Musical Theatre Development at Manhattan School of Music. She has been teaching the performing arts since 2008, and her journey began as a child singing and performing in  theatre, playing all the instruments she could get her hands on and she has never stopped!

Jenny is a multifaceted performer and passionate educator in theatre, music, and dance. Originally from New York City, she spent a decade performing and teaching in Montreal, Canada and has spent the past few years in Atlanta, Georgia. She is excited to continue her journey to  help foster a love of the arts!

When she’s not teaching, Jenny works as a vocalist, actor, harpist,  choreographer, and director along the U.S. and Canadian East Coast. Some  of her credits include: Rhonda in Fancy Nancy! The Musical (Segal  Center for Performing Arts), Carla in NINE (New York Summer Voice  Festival), and Napoleonic Apparition in A Christmas Carol (Hartford  Stage).

Overall Approach

I believe singing should be joyful and easy, while rooted in solid technique. In my lessons, we keep things engaging while focusing on body awareness, with healthy habits practiced until they become second nature. I believe it's a teachers job to help students understand how the voice and body work together as an instrument, giving them the skills to navigate their own sound with confidence in and out of the studio. My goal is to equip singers with the tools to perform across a wide range of styles and genres, while building the artistry, freedom, and longevity that make for a lifetime of healthy singing!

Physically, it is important for students to understand the mechanics of how their voices operate, along with stripping away bad habits by focusing on the skills required for releasing physical tension. Mentally, it is important to remove preconceived expectations students may have for their voices, which helps them discover their uninhibited natural gifts and talents. Additionally, diving into character development is vital and adds that extra sparkle in performance from shaping phrases to moving audiences. Helping both professionals and students craft their voices into healthy and powerful instruments via technique, combined with strong character/role developments, grows the confidence and skills necessary to cultivate performers’ instruments and gain the tools to succeed.
